Press release on the restoration of the historical furnishings in the old church in Højerup.

In 2017, the company Højeruplund received three large grants for the church ruin on the cliff edge and therefore began work on its restoration in the spring of 2018.

A grant from the Augustinus Foundation of DKK 355,396 was earmarked for the historical inventory (pulpit with sound canopy and Gothic folding door). Claus Englund Pedersen from Carpenter Conservator and Woodcarver Henning Pedersen and Son, Køge, and Tom Egelund from Nordic Conservation, Rådvad, have been working in the church on the restoration of these parts since August. On Friday, November 2nd, the two craft firms were able to hand over the finished result to the Højeruplund Society under the supervision of the Agency for Palaces and Cultural Properties" supervising architect Kjeld Borch Vesth, who incidentally had overseen a major restoration of the church during the "ruin campaign" in 1988-90.

The two craftsmen have been inspired by the old pulpit from approx. 1605 of the Tryggevælde type to recreate and paint some missing parts, namely a cherub and a hanging piece from the sounding board, and a hanging piece from the bottom of the pulpit, which they have donated to the church free of charge and which the Society has obtained permission from the Danish Heritage Agency to mount on the pulpit to fill the empty space. As the herm figure of the evangelist John has also been reinstated in its place, the pulpit appears almost intact – however, the herm figure of the evangelist Mark is still missing, which the two companies have submitted bids to recreate and paint for installation. The Højeruplund Society currently has an application out for foundation funding for this additional work, which was not included in the original project.

The Gothic door between the vestry and the nave, which was hidden away after a theft of a frieze in 2014, has also been restored and the stolen frieze has been reconstructed and painted, after which it is now back in its place in the door.

The craftsmen have also – as a labour of love – created a model of the panel in the historical door leaf, which was struck out by lightning in the 18th century and only recreated on the door with paint. The model has been handed over to the Højeruplund Society and will hopefully be hung at the inn. The Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces did not wish for the door to be recreated in its original form, as the story of the damaged panel itself

The tradesmen say they have enjoyed working on a site with such a spectacular view.

The renovation work on the church and churchyard will span two years. In 2018, the church building itself was refurbished – only a very minor inspection is needed for it to be declared complete, and in 2019 work will commence on the churchyard wall and the surrounding areas. The work is expected to be fully completed in autumn 2019.

The company is in ongoing dialogue with Stevns municipality regarding the work on the outdoor areas, as the municipality's plans for a heritage interpretation centre in Højeruplund are to be coordinated with the work on the church surroundings.

Fantastic opera evening at Højeruplund

The event was extremely well-attended, with many unfortunately turned away. The evening began with the Højeruplund fanfare on parforce horns – performed by
Jesper Jørgensen and Peter Henrik Tesdorpf. Then a singalong – 'I know where there is a beautiful garden' – where everyone sang their hearts out, the roof nearly coming off. Then it was time for opera with music by Mozart, where the two young opera singers Simon Duus and Sofie Elkjær Jensen truly thrilled the audience with their rendition of songs from The Marriage of Figaro – beautifully accompanied by Troels Roland on pianette. After a good hour, with darkness also starting to fall, the event in the church concluded with a standing ovation for the young artists. The evening of song continued with a coffee reception at Højeruplund, with songs by Carl Nielsen and songs from the opera Porgy and Bess – as well as a couple of singalong songs. It was then time to conclude a lovely and engaging evening of music and song at Højeruplund.

Remember the song and music evening at the old church Tuesday 14 August 2018 at 19:30 and subsequently at the café with pianist Troels Roland, soprano Sofie Elkjær Jensen and bass-baritone Simon Duus, who will, among other things, perform excerpts from Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro. Admission to the church is free. Coffee at the café is paid for separately to the proprietor.
